A Ministry of Tennison
Memorial United Methodist Church
Established in 1986

TLC is a pre-school program. The physical facility is a separate dedicated building adjacent to the Tennison Memorial United Methodist Church located on Church Street in Mt Pleasant, TX.

The purpose of TLC pre-school classes shall be to provide an opportunity for pre-school children to learn and play together in a friendly, happy, Christian atmosphere. Through cooperative interaction they will be able to gain new skills to form good habits and to learn to be responsible members of a group.

TLC is open to all children of legal residents of the United States regardless of race, nationality or creed. They will be placed in classes based on their age as of September 1 of the current school year.

TLC encourages the organization and activities of a parent support group. These activities planned in addition to the normal school-day activities add to the overall learning experience.

TLC’s curriculum is selected to meet the needs of preschool children
in the areas of emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and social development.

A child’s individual differences are expected, accepted, and used
to design appropriate activities. Interactions and activities are designed to
develop your child’s self-esteem and positive feelings toward learning.

Teaching Strategies
TLC teachers prepare the environment for children to learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, other children and materials. The children select many of their own activities from among a variety the teacher prepares. The children are mentally and physically active.

Aesthetic Development and Motivation
Children have daily opportunities for aesthetic expression and appreciation through art and music. A variety of art media is available. Children’s natural curiosity and desire to make sense of their world is used to motivate them to become involved in learning.

Language Development, Literacy, and Cognitive Development
Children have many opportunities to see how reading and writing are useful before they are instructed in letter names, sounds, and word identification. Basic skills develop when they are meaningful to children. An abundance of these activities are provided to develop language and literacy; listening to and reading stories and poems, taking field trips, dictating stories, participating in dramatic play; talking informally with other children and adults; and experimenting with writing. Children develop an understanding of concepts about themselves, others, and the world around them through observation, interacting with people and real objects, and seeking solution to concrete problems. Learning about math, science, social studies, health, and other content areas are integrated through meaningful activities.

Physical Development
Children have daily opportunities to use large muscles, including running, jumping, and balancing. Outdoor activities are planned daily so children can freely express themselves. Children have daily opportunist to develop small muscle skills through play activities, such as puzzles, painting, cutting and similar activities.

Guidance of Socioemotional Development
Teachers enhance children’s self-control by using positive guidance techniques such as modeling and encouraging expected behavior, redirecting children to a more acceptable activity, and setting clear limits. Children are provided many opportunities to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiation, and talking with the person involved to solve interpersonal problems.
